One of Tohoku's largest indoor rinks
The Akita Prefectural Skating Rink describes itself as one of the largest genuine indoor skating rinks in the Tohoku region, a place where anyone can skate casually. The building holds a 333.3 by 13 metre speed-skating oval of about 4,368 square metres and a 60 by 30 metre hockey rink of 1,789 square metres.
During the season it runs a long list of skating classes and plans events such as a Christmas festival. For small children who cannot skate yet, an indoor snow park is laid out for play, and instructors certified by the Japan Skating Federation teach the basics, starting with how to put the skates on correctly.
Opening day on 25 October brings a service day, with junior high school pupils and younger skating free. Outside the winter the hall is let out as an event space, so the ice appears only for the season.
