Two Almelo ice clubs merged into one rink

IJsbaan Almelo grew out of two flourishing clubs that each kept their own rink: IJsclub Twenthe on the Gravenallee and IJsclub Het Oosten on the Almelo-Nordhorn canal. Twenthe was also active in summer with skating training, while Het Oosten, thanks to its open position, quickly had a mirror-smooth rink in a frost.

In the 1990s, when Almelo wanted to push out its city limits, the municipality asked the two clubs to talk constructively about a merger. Het Oosten lay exactly in the town's new-build plans, and Twenthe needed a new location after some setbacks.

The newly founded Stichting IJsbaan Almelo rented a piece of land on the Sluiskade south side from Graaf van Rechteren Limpurg, across the canal from the sports park. The volunteers put up a new clubhouse, with equipment to sweep the track and a modern lighting installation. The rink had not been skated on since 2018 until a hard frost brought Almeloers back to it, and the board is looking for new volunteers.

Skates & rentals

The rink does not hire out skates, because as a natural-ice rink it depends on the weather and runs on volunteers; skates cannot be sharpened at the rink either.

Skating with children

The rink rules of Stichting IJsbaan Almelo allow only skaters on the ice, with an exception for parents, carers and supervisors and for sleds, which should stay along the sides; skating aids (Bobby's, skate frames) are allowed only along the edge for those who cannot skate yet.
