Sportoase Groot Schijn stands in Groot Schijn Park, on the eastern edge of Antwerp. Its two covered rinks make it the largest skating complex in the country, according to Sportoase, and the architects ZJA list the building as a 2021 project, built by Van Roey. Inside the entrance hall the ice rink is to the left and the swimming pool to the right.
The big rink is used for ice hockey training and games and for figure skating, while a smaller rink is meant for skating lessons and recreation. The stands for hockey games are reached through the cafeteria.
The Antwerp Phantoms, an ice hockey club since 1972, share the building. They won the Belgian Cup in 1988 and three straight Belgian Hockey League titles from 2001 to 2003. The design won a special mention at the 2023 Architizer A+Awards and first prize at the 2021 BIM Public Project Award.
