A round, snow-proof arena built for Tsugaru winters
The Aomori Prefectural Skating Rink, also known as Mori Transport Arena, was built so that people in the snowy Tsugaru region could enjoy sport and recreation through all four seasons. It is a round steel-and-concrete hall, described as the largest-span flat-roofed circular building in Japan's heavy-snow regions, with a 250 metre speed track, an international-size 60 by 30 metre hockey rink and 1,058 seats.
The roof is its signature: it is designed to carry 10,000 tonnes, the weight of 2 metres of snow plus the structure itself, using bridge technology with six arch-truss bridges, and the total cost was 4.47 billion yen. The wall facing the entrance hall is meant to suggest sunlight, tree rings and ripples spreading friendship.
Under the concrete floor lie 48 kilometres of pipe carrying cooled antifreeze, and the rink's ice-making capacity is likened to about 16,000 household refrigerators. In winter the hall is a skating rink; in summer it turns to in-line skating.
