The ice rink in the 7,800-seat main hall of Baku's Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex
Buz Arena is the ice rink in the main hall of the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex in Baku, a building begun in 1976 and commissioned in November 1990. Ice had been used in the complex's side halls in earlier years; the Ministry of Youth and Sports then built the ice in the main hall, and it opened on 2 June 2023.
The main hall holds 7,800 spectators and measures 70 by 40 metres. The training building beside it has three halls, one of them for hockey and figure skating on ice. The complex took Heydar Aliyev's name in March 2004 and was rebuilt in 2014-15 ahead of the first European Games in Baku.
At the 2023 opening, figure skater Sabina Aliyeva, a participant in the 2023 Grand Prix and Winter Olympic Festival, performed on the new ice, and the report noted that the hall has everything needed to develop figure skating and hockey. The complex has also staged three rhythmic gymnastics World Cup rounds, two European championships and a world championship.
