Home ice of a skating club founded in 1922
The Eishalle Berchtesgaden at the Schießstätte is the home ice of the Eislaufverein Berchtesgaden, founded in 1922 after plans for a club had been discussed for many years. Ice skating in the town is older than Berchtesgaden's well-known bobsled and luge. Early hockey was played partly on the Aschauerweiher pond and partly on rinks the club set up in the village.
Natural ice was a recurring problem until the covered hall came at the Schießstätte, which has room for 800 spectators. The club switched to artificial ice in 1974.
From its first year the club held children's masked festivals, and they continue today as an ice carnival on Carnival Sunday. It marked its centenary with a two-day celebration and a 128-page chronicle, and it teaches hockey to anyone over four.
