Cancún’s first ice rink, built to Olympic size

Happi Arena opened to the public on August 1, 2024, as the first ice rink in Cancún. At its announcement two days earlier it was billed as the first Olympic-size rink in Latin America, built to official Olympic measurements. Jesús Alcántara, president of the Mexico Warriors club and a former Mexican national-team player, led the project with partners Eduardo Valencia and Eloy Cerda, after looking for a way to open a rink since 2018.

Alcántara announced he would base the Mexico Warriors here, and Valencia said he hoped Cancún would become a hockey center where players from different countries meet for tournaments, clinics and camps. The Cancún Hockey League plays here too: in January 2026 the Tigres de Quintana Roo opened their title defense on this ice. Alcántara has said the rink will not be complete until the Maya community skates on it.

Public skating, figure skating and curling were on the schedule from the start. In May 2026 the rink hosted the national figure-skating championships, and on the day Donovan Carrillo skated, the arena was packed and dozens of fans could not get in. “I would have liked to have an ice rink as a child, and in Cancún they have one,” Carrillo told reporters.
