An Olympic-size Apennine rink reopened at Christmas 2025 after seven years

The Palaghiaccio di Cerreto Laghi has an Olympic-size rink of 30 by 60 metres, 1,800 square metres, approved for any ice activity and with two stands for spectators. It is the only structure of its kind in the Reggio Emilia area.

The rink closed to the public in 2018, when the heavy load of snow caused structural damage to its roof. The municipality of Ventasso then refitted the building from the ice and the machinery to the roof and the changing rooms, and the palaghiaccio reopened on Christmas Day 2025 after seven years.

Its first winter back drew more than 13,000 visits. In summer 2026 the rink hosted teams and skaters from all over Italy for figure skating, ice dance and synchronised training, and a figure-skating show with international champions was confirmed for mid-August. The mayor's aim is to add professional skating to recreational use, working with the Italian Ice Sports Federation.
