A 400-metre indoor speed-skating palace named after Lydia Skoblikova, open to the public in the evenings and at weekends
The Ural Lightning ice palace in Chelyabinsk is named after the six-time Olympic champion Lydia Skoblikova and went into service on 28 December 2004, on the 40th anniversary of her triumph at the 1964 Innsbruck Games. After Moscow's Krylatskoye, it was the second standard 400-metre speed-skating track with artificial ice under a roof in Russia, and at 222 metres above sea level it is the highest covered speed-skating rink in the country.
The building is also used by hockey players, figure skaters, curlers and short-track skaters, and has hosted the 2010 World Mixed Doubles and Senior Curling Championships, a 2011 speed-skating World Cup stage and the 2015 European Speed Skating Championships.
Evenings and weekends belong to mass skating, with 600 pairs of skates, protective kit and qualified instructors. Two unfrozen zones hold seating, a skate-changing area and a buffet that opens during the sessions.
