Chemnitz's ice complex, built up from a 1950 roller stadium

The grounds on Wittgensdorfer Straße began in 1947-50 as a roller stadium for roller sports in summer and a sprayed-ice rink in winter. The ice hall followed in 1964-65, with stands for about 2,500 seated spectators, and between 1968 and 1972 a 400 m speed-skating oval, a 30 x 60 m training hall and a central refrigeration plant for all the ice surfaces went into service.

Built as a showpiece of the GDR, the oval hosted the 41st women's all-around world speed-skating championships in 1983. It was demolished and rebuilt between March 2020 and October 2021, with an iced infield added, and public skating there runs under open sky from mid-October to mid-March. With the hall and the training hall it forms what the rink calls the largest connected ice area in Germany.

The complex became Eissport und Freizeit GmbH Chemnitz in 1997-98, and in 2024 it was renamed for the figure-skating coach Jutta Müller, who died in November 2023. The ice hockey club ESV 03 Chemnitz, whose men's team are the Chemnitz Crashers, trains in the hall, as do the skating clubs USG and CEC, and national-squad speed skaters train on the oval.
