Opened on 3 March 1989 in the Bürgerpark Nord
Darmstadt's Eissporthalle opened officially on 3 March 1989, followed by a two-month trial period. Skating in the city is older: the Darmstädter Schlittschuhclub ran its own rink from 1 January 1887. The hall's ice measures 30 by 60 metres, and on Fridays it turns into a disco on ice.
In 1989/90, the first season after the opening, the TSG Stars won promotion to what was then the fifth-tier Hessenliga, and in March 1990 they played the first German-German match in 36 years, against what is now the Dresdner Eislöwen. Later, the RSC's ice hockey team was given better ice times in the hall than the TSG's, which led to the TSG team being dissolved in 2008.
Today the ESC Darmstadt Dukes train and play their home games here. Their first team plays in the Hessenliga, and the club re-registered in 2011 and added a floorball section a year later. The adult figure-skating section of the TSG 1846 was founded in 2000.
