Built in 1980 as one of West Germany's five largest ice halls

The ice and tennis hall in Diez was built in 1980 by the Sport- und Freizeit GmbH for about 8 million marks. With 1,300 seats, 2,500 standing places and a hall almost 16 metres high around a 60 by 30 metre ice surface, it counted among the five largest ice halls in the Federal Republic.

A fire in 1999 led to a renovation and modernisation of the hall, including a ceiling of about 4,000 square metres of aluminium to cut energy costs by up to 20 per cent. After the rebuild it has 800 seats and 2,500 standing places.

The town of Diez committed itself to allow no further ice or tennis halls on municipal land until 2040. The ice hockey club Pohlheim and the Eis- und Rollsportclub Diez train in the hall, and its year-round programme has included ice revues, the rock fairy tale Tabaluga, an oldies show and ballet on ice.
