A natural-ice rink in Esch-sur-Alzette's municipal park, kept up twice a day by the city's outdoor team.
Currently out of season Esch-sur-Alzette's natural-ice rink in the Gaalgebierg municipal park opens only when the weather allows it. The city's page gives no season dates, says entry is free and says there are no closing hours. Official schedule update
The Patinoire Gaalgebierg is Esch-sur-Alzette's natural-ice rink, set in the municipal park on the Gaalgebierg hill and open when the weather is cold enough. It covers almost 2,000 square metres, measured at 70 by 28 metres. While temperatures stay below freezing the city's outdoor team touches up the ice twice a day, adding three layers each morning and evening. In summer the same space, beside a covered boules hall and a large playground, is where Esch children have long learned to ride a bicycle.
The hill became a recreation ground for the city in 1910, at the initiative of André Koch, and the park's pavilion was inaugurated in 1957. Its name means gallows hill. The hill also holds a campsite and an animal park, and the park hosts events such as the Luxembourg Beach Open and the Bairrada festival.
