An ice rink beside the coke ovens of a World Heritage site

The Zollverein-Eisbahn is a seasonal rink in front of the Kokerei Zollverein, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site in Essen. It stretches 150 metres along the coke ovens and chimneys, and in the evening a light installation sets the ice aglow while stalls in the little winter village serve hot drinks and snacks.

The Stiftung Zollverein runs it every winter for the whole family. During the regular sessions the rink is open to everyone, so people with disabilities skate together with their families, friends and other skaters. Mobility aids such as rehab buggies and gliding aids are allowed on the ice, and in the first hour of each session skaters are asked to take particular care of one another.

Children who are finding their feet can hold on to the Hilfspinguine, small penguin-shaped helpers that steady the first steps. Eating and drinking is not allowed on the ice itself, so warm snacks are taken at the stalls around it.
