A 525 m² rink in the courtyard of Schloss Freudenstein, a 16th-century castle in Freiberg's old town
Currently out of season The city's page gives the Eisbahn im Schloss as 14 November 2026 to 21 February 2027; no sessions are listed here before the opening day. Checked on 4 October 2026. Official schedule update
Schloss Freudenstein in Freiberg's old town is a four-wing building from the 16th century. Its predecessor castle was laid out around 1175-80 by Margrave Otto the Rich to protect the town and its silver mining, and in the late 18th century the building was converted into a storehouse. Since the end of 2008 it has housed two collections of world renown.
In winter the castle courtyard holds a large ice rink of 525 square metres, with a mulled-wine hut and a heated winter bar around it. For children there are skating aids in the shape of a penguin and a bear, and an ice master is on site at all times. Two separate lanes with eight ice stocks each stand ready for Eisstockschießen. In summer the same courtyard is the cultural centre of Freiberg, from June to September.
