A 1934 Olympic stadium under a roof

The Olympia-Eissport-Zentrum in Garmisch-Partenkirchen comprises three roofed halls, one of them a curling hall, and an unroofed outdoor area with an ice surface and an ice-stock field. The Olympia-Eisstadion, still the biggest hall, was started in August 1934 for the 1936 Winter Olympics and finished in December 1934 after only 106 working days; it was not yet roofed and held 7,000 spectators.

The stadium was fully roofed in 1964 to a design by Franz Hart. On 4 April 1987 a strong foehn storm took the whole roof off, with damage of one million Deutsche Mark. The last big rebuild came in 1994, when the south stand became an all-seated stand, and a further roofed hall with a stand for 670 people and a curling hall with three lanes were added.

Besides being a federal training centre for curling and ice-stock sport, the centre is the playing and training ground of the SC Riessersee, the SC Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the TSV Farchant. The 1936 Olympic ice-hockey tournament, which counted at the same time as a world and European championship, was played here.
