IJsvereniging Oostermoer: founded in 1916, almost lost, and given a new 400 m rink in 2014

Public skating at IJsvereniging Oostermoer: the next 7 days

Currently out of season IJsvereniging Oostermoer's natural-ice rink on the Boerdijk at the edge of Gasselternijveen (a 400 m land rink of 180 by 70 m) opens only when the ice is safe: its rules say the rink is closed at once when keeping it open is no longer responsible and that nobody may enter it outside the opening hours. The site posts no opening hours or ice status for the coming winter. No sessions are listed here. Checked 11 October 2026. Official schedule update

A 1916 skating club revived in 2012 with a new 400 m land rink in 2014

Skating in Gasselternijveen goes back to the early twentieth century, on the Vaart. A founding meeting was held on 3 January 1916, first under the name Volksvermaken Oostermoer; by January 1929 people spoke of IJsvereniging Gasselternijveen, and only from 1935 does the name Oostermoer appear.

Without a suitable rink the association ran into a dead end: the canoe pond in the Hunzepark was unfit as a rink, and for a time it existed on paper only. A small group of volunteers brought it back to life in 2012 with a plan for a new rink.

The Buurtvereniging Hoofdstraat-Noord promised 10,000 euros from its Oranjefonds prize, and the contractor Hoornstra from Nieuw-Buinen got to work, so that in November 2014 the new rink became a fact: a natural-ice land rink of 180 by 70 metres.
