Opened in 1993 to replace the Stadspark track; host of the national long-track championships every year
Sportcentrum Kardinge opened in 1993. Until then Groningen's ice rink stood in the Stadspark, where an artificial track had lain from 1970 for more than two decades, and the pool was the Noorderbad; new neighbourhoods on the north-east side of the city needed new sports facilities, and the rink and pool moved into Kardinge.
The 400 m track is a competition track where the national long-track championships are held every year. A footbridge crosses it to seven indoor tennis courts inside the oval, and a curling lane lies on the outer lane. Beside it, the 1,800 square metre ice hockey hall, 30 by 60 m, hosts hockey matches, courses, figure skaters, short-trackers and curlers.
On the trim hours skaters from clubs such as Hardrijdersvereniging Oost Groningen, IJsvereniging Groningen and De IJsvogels of Surhuisterveen train in groups. The stand beside the oval holds 500 seated and 3,500 standing spectators.
