An upside-down Viking ship of glued timber, built as the 1994 Olympic speed-skating arena.
Currently out of season Vikingskipet has not announced its 2026/27 ice period yet. The ice-period page it still shows is last winter's: it announced the ice period from 7 November 2025 to 22 February 2026 and open skating for the public, so those dates do not apply to this season. The hall's news says there is no summer ice in 2026 while its lighting is replaced, and no dates for this winter are posted. Check the hall's page before you go. Official schedule update
Vikingskipet was built as the arena for speed skating, figure skating and short track at the 1994 Winter Olympics, and its design was made public in 1991. It is shaped like an upside-down Viking ship, 250 metres long, 110 metres wide and 36 metres high. Biong & Biong and Niels Torp Arkitekter gave it load-bearing glued-laminated timber arches with a longest span of 96 metres, and no timber span had ever been longer.
The 1994 Games, where Johan Olav Koss was crowned with three gold medals and three world records, remain the high point, and Vikingskipet and the neighbouring Hamar OL-Amfi have hosted a long run of international championships since.
Speed skaters and skating clubs now use the hall as their permanent training arena and the national team holds camps there. HIL bandy trains in what is called Norway's only indoor bandy hall, and Norway's largest indoor second-hand and antiques market has been held here every spring and autumn since 1995.
