Hengevelde's volunteer rink: from the Zwarte Water to the Gorsveldweg and an old school as clubhouse
Currently out of season IJsbaan Hengevelde (Stichting IJsclub Wegdam) on the Gorsveldweg is a natural-ice rink that opens when the ice is thick enough. Its latest news, from 11 January 2026, announced an opening at 11:00 with more than 8 cm of ice; nothing is posted for the coming winter yet. In a long ice period it is open Monday to Friday 09:00 to 21:00 and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays 10:00 to 17:00. No sessions are listed here. Checked 11 October 2026. Official schedule update
Skating in Hengevelde began on the Zwarte Water. Later the rink moved to its present site on the Gorsveldweg, where an old school building was restored and put up as the clubhouse, which has served for years.
The rink was formally founded on 11 July 1968 as Stichting IJsclub Wegdam by Theo Meyerink, Gerard ten Dam, Bernard Varenbrink and Tonnie Tuinte. When the temperature drops below zero the club, in its own words, gets ice fever. In its first fifty years the club grew into a dynamic association of volunteers.
It is a recreational rink for everyone from beginners to keen skaters. The inner ring is for those who like a quiet rink, and the middle areas are meant for children, figure skaters and hockey skaters. On both the outer and inner track skaters go anticlockwise.
