The Eishalle Herford opened in 1980, like the neighbouring open-air pool, as a stadium with a tent roof that was open on three sides. In the late 1980s its best years brought up to 4,000 spectators to ice hockey games. A hall was built over the ice in 2000; it holds about 2,000 people, all standing.
Since 1994 the rink and the pool have been run by the Freizeiteinrichtungen Stadtwerke Herford, and in summer the pool is heated by the same plant that freezes the ice in winter.
The local hockey clubs have changed with the town's finances: the Herforder Eislauf-Gemeinschaft went bankrupt in 1994, its successor, the Herforder Eishockeyclub, was dissolved in 2004, and since then the Herforder Eishockey Verein, the Ice Dragons, has played here. The TG Herford figure-skating section trains on the ice.
