A royal ice club of 1930 with its own 400 m rink and an Olympic champion's first ice

IJsclub De Noordpool was founded in 1930 and quickly asked for royal approval, which was granted by decree on 10 December 1930. For the rink it bought half a hectare from the Stokkers heirs, and the starting capital came from interest-free shares, a tradition that continues: anyone who joins still buys shares.

From 1932 the koek en zopie stall was leased out, and that year Mr G. Veth gave 240 guilders towards the first clubhouse. The first school races were held on 24 January 1933, a tradition that lives on in natural-ice winters. After a 1959 extension and a new clubhouse in 1963 the rink had to make way for a road in 1975; through land consolidation it was moved and enlarged to 1.2 hectares, big enough for an official 400 metre track.

The club owns both its land and its buildings. Mark Tuitert, Olympic champion over 1500 metres, learned to skate on this rink.
