Kapfenberg's ice hall began in the 1970s as an uncovered ice surface. It was extended with stands in several steps, then roofed, and parts such as the buffet were linked to the indoor pool. Without a working thermal envelope or proper ventilation and heating, its renovation became unavoidable. The town picked the competition design of.tmp architekten in 2015, partly because it kept the daylight from the large windows.
Planning from 2019 and the rebuild uncovered the original structure, and the 90 by 60 metre volume was turned into a full ice arena and multi-purpose hall that the architects proposed to call the Stadthalle. A foyer wing on the north side and a changing-room wing on the south side were added, the existing steel trusses, spanning about 52 metres, were reinforced, and a new facade of perforated sheet went on. The project was the biggest in the town's history.
The renewed ice is home to the public skaters and to the Kapfenberg hockey club KSV. As an event venue the hall now takes 3,800 visitors for sport and 5,000 for concerts.
