Public skating at Jäähalli Wirta-Areena: the next 7 days

Currently out of season The Wirta-Areena ice hall in Kemijärvi (Pelkosenniementie 34) is open every year from 15 August to 15 April. The city's page lists free public sessions each week: Tuesday 15:00-16:15 without pucks, Wednesday 15:00-16:15 with pucks and Sunday 18:00-19:00 family skating (mind the teams' Sunday league games). The page prints no dates for this season, so no sessions are listed here until dated times are posted. Checked 11 October 2026. Official schedule update

A hall built over a 1983 rink: Kemijärvi's Wirta-Areena, opened for play in 2001

Kemijärven Kiekko, founded in 1978, bought a pressure dome over its rink in 1983 so hockey could be played sheltered from rain and wind. In 1986 the town laid refrigeration pipes under the rink area it owned, and in 1987 Kemijärven Jäähalli Oy was founded and bought the hall's refrigeration plant.

Work on the new ice hall began in June 2000 and the first game was played there on 11 January 2001. Members of Kemijärven Kiekko and the Kaukalopalloilijat rinkball club put in about 18,000 hours of volunteer work during construction. Rinkball began in Kemijärvi in 1993 and curling in 2005, and four curling lanes are painted into the floor concrete.

The town owns 87.5 per cent of the company that runs the hall, with Kemijärven Kiekko holding 8.6 and the Finnish Ice Hockey Foundation 3.9. The town bought a new gas-powered ice resurfacer in 2010 and a new refrigeration plant in 2012.
