The Stadtwerke Eisfestival has been a fixture of Kiel's winter for 25 years. Its rink at the Germaniahafen covers more than 600 square metres and is completely roofed, so skating goes ahead whatever the weather, and the season runs for eight weeks.
Besides open skating, the festival sets aside exclusive sessions for children and for teenagers, when the ice belongs to that age group plus at most one adult companion. Gloves are compulsory on the ice, and helmets and pads for children can be borrowed on site.
The snack bar on site serves warm and cold drinks and light meals, and the festival also offers Stockschießen on plastic lanes, company parties and children's birthdays alongside the skating. Kiel-Marketing, the city's tourism body, organises the event and takes bookings for the group offers on its website.
