Arena Nordvest began as an outdoor, full-size speed-skating track built to international standards. It opened officially on 24 January 2009, after a trial opening for users on 10 December 2008, and Hjalmar «Hjallis» Andersen cut the ribbon.
The early years were hard. The track went bankrupt in April 2010, and on 26 October 2010 Kristiansund's city council voted to buy it. In the 2011/12 season mild weather, extreme weather and rain forced the ice to close in February 2012. On 2 October 2012 the track was renamed Lerøy Kunstisbane, and in spring 2016 it was decided to build Norway's fourth full-size skating hall over the track; a hall now covers it.
Today the arena has three lengthwise lanes, a full-size hockey rink and two curling lanes, and 4,000 square metres are set aside for free play and family fun.
