Built in 1971 and brought back by a local club
The Lauterbach hall was built in 1971 and counts, by the rink's own account, among the oldest artificial-ice stadiums in Germany. It soon drew about 50,000 visitors a year, from well beyond the borders of Hessen.
Cracks in the open timber roof, caused by fog and dew drifting through the building, pushed measured limits over the line, and the hall was closed on 1 December 2008. The EC Lauterbach 2012 e.V. formed in autumn 2011 to fill it with life again; donations passed 130,000 euros, and with grants from town, district and state the refurbishment began in August 2012. Closing the hall's open sides was part of the work.
The club entered a first team, the Luchse Lauterbach, in the Hessenliga for 2012/2013, and the arena serves as a Hessian squad base of the Hessian ice sports association. The figure-skating section counts about 50 active skaters between 5 and 46 years.
