Leek's natural-ice club on the Nienoord estate: from a rejected first rink to the red rink and a 400 m track
Currently out of season IJsvereniging Leek runs the natural-ice rink on the Nienoord estate at Nienoord 13, and its page says its standard hours when there is ice are Monday to Saturday 09:30 to 21:00 and Sundays and holidays 09:30 to 18:00, adjusted for the weather; changes are posted on Facebook and Instagram. No sessions are listed here. Checked 10 October 2026. Official schedule update
IJsvereniging Leek has been tied to the Nienoord estate since its founding in 1871. After many wanderings across the Nienoord polder it laid its first own rink there in 1908-1909, though the club's own history calls that rink a real drama.
In 1951 the club moved to the middle of Leek, and the rink there opened officially on 12 January 1953. Its water came from a river that also carried a meat factory's waste water, so people skated on red ice and the rink became known as the red rink.
In 1964 the committee's dream came true when a big 400 metre rink was laid out on the Nienoord estate, suitable for official long-track races. Over time the association has turned more to recreational skating, and the rink has good floodlighting and a cosy, atmospheric canteen.
