Natural-ice club rink in Marum West, founded 7 March 1912

IJsclub Marum West was founded at a meeting on 7 March 1912. Before that, people skated on flooded fields in the Marumer Lage between Noordwijk and Marum. In 1912 G. Godijk, R. Reindersma and J. Linstra took the initiative to find a place for a permanent rink, and the club found one on land belonging to the Bouwsma sisters, who kept the café De Koppelpaarden. By December 1912 it had 93 members.

The rink is natural ice. From 1924 its water was pumped from the neighbouring ditch, and the club now owns a Heemaf submersible pump that fills the rink at about 2,000 cubic metres per 24 hours. Steps towards a new canteen were taken in September 2004.

Racing has a long record here: the first race was held in 1914, horse-drawn sleigh races ran from 1917 to 1986, and on 1 March 1986 the rink hosted the first national Solex moped racing championship on natural ice. In 1987, the club's 75th year, the municipal championship for all villages of Marum was skated here on 5 February. When frost fails, the club has organised trips to an artificial rink instead.
