Meppel's oldest sports club: a skating club since 1864 and a floodlit rink at Koedijkslanden since 2006

The Meppeler IJsclub has been a fixture in Meppel since 1864, kept alive by volunteers even in years with little skating. At its winter festivals skating races were held, with high prize money for the time for men over 18 and, from 1910, for women. In 1907 the club limited its aim to promoting skating, since the weight had always been on the winter events.

One anecdote about the old rink at the Vledder tells how in 1899 the flooded rink was sabotaged in a frost by a gardener who broke the dams. Around 1938 things got tense when the municipality withdrew the site without offering an alternative; for a time tickets and snacks were sold from a wagon on wheels.

Around 1980 the municipality laid out a rink with a wooden clubhouse beside the new Jan Steenstraat district, and from 2006 an entirely new rink and sports field with a multifunctional clubhouse was built at Sportpark Koedijkslanden.
