Skating on the Zaubersee, Münster's only open-air rink

The Winterzeit at the Germania Campus grew out of a vision of the campus's founder, who wanted a lake at its centre, the Zaubersee, where people could skate in winter. From that idea the rink appeared in 2008, because Münster offered no way of skating in the open air.

Over the years the rink was joined by huts selling food and drink and by events such as a children's day and a students' day. In 2026 sponsors paid for skating aids on the ice, which make skating easier for beginners, and on Saturdays the rink holds a Disco on Ice from 19:00.

The campus lies outside the city centre, so families and friends can escape the bustle of the Christmas markets: children skate while parents watch with a mulled wine or something to eat afterwards. The season runs from late November to mid-February.
