Niigata's city ice arena, the first year-round rink on Honshu's Sea of Japan coast
The MGC Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Ice Arena opened on 1 February 2014 as the first indoor rink on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu to stay open all year. It was built after skaters and clubs petitioned the city, years after Niigata's last two privately run rinks had closed in 2003.
The main rink measures 60 by 30 metres, and a smaller rink next to it holds three curling sheets. The cooling system uses liquid carbon dioxide. The name comes from a naming-rights contract: Mitsubishi Gas Chemical took it over from the first sponsor, Asahi Alex Holdings, in April 2019.
Figure skater Ami Nakai, who learned in the arena's skating classes, won an Olympic bronze medal in Milan in February 2026, and in 2018 the Russian figure skating team trained here before the Pyeongchang Games. Rink rules ask skaters to circle to the left and to wear gloves, and the hall stays at or below 10 degrees even in summer.
