Podhale's hall: open ice since 1952, a Universiade rink twice

The ice rink in Nowy Targ opened on 6 December 1952, when the Podhale hockey players marked the occasion with a 6-2 win over Gwardia Kraków. Artificial ice followed on 18 and 19 November 1961, and between 1967 and 1975 a sports centre was built around it, which put a roof over the ice and the stands.

The hall hosted the Winter Universiade ice hockey tournament in 1993, after which its walls, roof, lighting and boards were renovated, and again in 2001, when the benches were replaced with seats. In 2004 the cooling system was replaced and the hall held a pre-qualification tournament for the Turin 2006 Olympics.

Today the Miejska Hala Lodowa has a 58 by 28 metre ice surface and a capacity of 3,000. It has staged the Polish Cup in ice hockey in 2005 and the boxing at the 2023 European Games, and its lighting was switched to LED in 2018.
