Passau's half-open Eis-Arena, home ice of the Black Hawks since 2003

Passau's first ice hockey club, in the 1950s, played on a natural-ice rink on the Exerzierplatz in front of the Nibelungenhalle. Two local teams merged to found the EHF Passau Black Hawks on 23 December 1997, and the Eislaufplatz on Westerburger Straße was converted into an artificial rink in 1999. In March 2003 it was announced that the Eis-Arena would be built as planned.

The first game in the Eis-Arena took place on 16 November 2003 in front of more than 1,000 spectators. The half-open stadium in Passau-Kohlbruck was rebuilt for the 2007/08 season and now holds about 1,500 spectators, 200 of them seated. A communications firm held the naming rights for three years, when it was called IceGate, and the name reverted to Eis-Arena Passau from 2010/11.

The Black Hawks were Bavarian champions here in 2006/07, and the stadium was one of two venues of the 2007 IIHF inline hockey world championship. An initiative is pushing to turn it into a closed hall with ventilation, to deal with drips forming on the ice and with fog.
