Lower Franconia's first ice rink, roofed as the Icedome in 1999
The ice at Schweinfurt's Hainig was officially opened on 1 December 1973, the first ice rink in Lower Franconia. It was a community project of the Eislauf- und Rollschuhverein Schweinfurt, which began in 1934 as a roller-sports club. Members and the local American community prepared the site, the firm Pfister built the 30 by 60 metre surface, and ammonia pipes under the ice allowed a longer season.
For its first 26 winters the rink was open to the sky, and bad weather often kept school classes away. The roof came at the end of 1999, when it became the Icedome. At the opening the hall held about 3,500 spectators, with a stand for about 250 along the player benches that hides part of the ice. The club's hockey team has played as the Mighty Dogs since 1999 and won the Bayernliga title in its first covered season, going up to the Oberliga. The city of Schweinfurt owns the Icedome today.
