The Sendai rink where Yuzuru Hanyu learned to skate, open all year at FUN-TE!
Ice Rink Sendai stands in the sports building of the FUN-TE! complex in Izumi ward and skates all year round. The rink opened in 1988 as part of a Daiei store, the second Daiei store built with a rink; it was closed from 2004 to 2007 and again for four months after the 2011 earthquake.
Yuzuru Hanyu trained here until he was 17, and since the earthquake he has donated large sums to the rink from the royalties of his books. Fans from all over the world now make a pilgrimage to what is called a holy place for them. Coaches who came here from the Shin-Matsudo rink trained many of Japan's top singles skaters, among them Takeshi Honda, Shizuka Arakawa, Akiko Suzuki and Hanyu.
After the Katsuyama skating club closed in April 2009 and until the Morioka rink opened in 2015, it was the only rink in the Tohoku region open all day all year, so athletes from across Tohoku came to practise there, especially in summer.
