The Dicky van der Werf IJsbaan is the 400-metre natural-ice track of IJsclub Sneek, which carries 1871 in its name. The club in its present form was founded on 1 November 1969 through a merger of the ice clubs Friso and De Friesche Jeugd. For the club, 1945, the year the guns fell silent, was a memorable one, and its minutes of 56 years of members' meetings were deposited with the Frisian Maritime Museum.
Skaters go round the track in one direction only, anticlockwise, under floodlight masts, and certain corners are marked off for ice hockey. The club runs entirely on volunteers.
The club's 150th anniversary produced a book of almost 100 pages with stories and photographs from then and now, which almost 50 local companies and people helped to fund.
