Tennis courts turned into a refrigerated rink each autumn

The Kunsteislaufplatz in St. Johann im Pongau is a refrigerated rink that the town builds on its tennis courts. Foils and cooling hoses go down first and form the foundation, then water is added layer by layer until the ice is 8 to 10 cm thick. The works yard team needed 11 days for the job, supported by the water rescue service.

Skating there is independent of the weather, as the town notes. The 2025/26 season closed on 15 February 2026 after 91 open days and about 10,000 visitors, among them 2,500 pupils who used the ice in the mornings during sports lessons. The busiest day was 23 November, with about 250 guests, and three ice discos turned the rink into a dance floor.
