Built in 1959 as a roller and ice skating ground, turned into an artificial ice rink in 1967/68.
Currently out of season The city's page prints a weekly timetable but no season dates, and its price list is still headed Saison 2025/2026. The operator says the rink opens every year from October to March; the opening date, hours and prices for 2026/27 are not posted yet. Official schedule update
The Kunsteisbahn at the Rennbahnweg goes back to 1959, when the city built a 32 by 65 metre sports ground by the racecourse that served roller skaters in summer and ice skaters in winter. Two years later it was doubled in size to 4,160 square metres. Only in the 1967/68 season did the city turn it into an artificial ice rink, around the time ice hockey began to matter in Steyr.
Skating in Steyr is older than the rink: Edi Weinberger, a Steyr original, founded the Rollschuh- und Eislaufverein in 1954 and taught skating to children and adults for decades, and the town once had Austria's largest natural-ice facility. Martina Kolar-Starzer, now deputy director of the city administration, won numerous figure-skating titles.
