Székesfehérvár's municipal arena sinks its ice below ground, a design drawn from ice lenses and ice pits
Loading public skate, freestyle, and stick & puck times for MET Aréna Székesfehérvár…
The MET Aréna was built by the city of Székesfehérvár with the Hungarian government's support. It was designed as the home of Fehérvár ice hockey and as a venue for other sports and events. The Székesfehérvári Városfejlesztési Kft. was responsible for the design, led by the architects Mihály Balázs and Tamás Attila Tarnóczky.
The team drew on two ideas, the ice lens and the ice pit. A monolithic reinforced-concrete frame carries a roof of white metal cladding on a steel lattice, recalling the ice lens that forms at ground level in frost. The playing surface lies below ground at basement level, where the concrete walls store cold and help to make and keep the ice.
The arena stands 15 minutes from the historic centre and five minutes by car from the M7 motorway.
