A Târgu Mureș-area hockey hall with 1,800 m2 of ice that opens to the public on weekend evenings
Patinoarul Mureș is a balloon-covered ice hall in Sângeorgiu de Mureș, built in 2021 with 1,800 square metres of ice. Its team says its first steps were taken in February 2021 and that since then more than 700 children have learned to skate there, about 150 players train in its hockey groups and it has three adult amateur teams.
The hall continues a local tradition. Its history page traces organised hockey in Târgu Mureș to 1935, when a rink was set up in the Liget, and notes that the town won the Romanian Cup in 1946 and that Locomotiva-RATA won the national championship twice in a row, in 1950 and 1951.
Public skating began in spring 2022, after the pandemic, but the hall puts performance sport first: it is a balloon-covered rink whose priority is competitive hockey, so a weekend session can occasionally give way to a hockey competition. The hall's own words are that it opened its doors to the public, but that the athletes come first.
