A Groningen ice club from 1883, remembered for its famous cafe on the Damsterdiep

IJsvereniging Kaakheem dates its official founding to 1 November 1883, when it received its first subsidy, soon after the Dutch skating union was founded in 1882. In those early days people skated on the Damsterdiep in baize underpants or skirts, with skates tied to shoes or socks.

Cafe Kaakheem on the Damsterdiep was famous far and wide, with its landlord serving hot punch and organising ice parties, and a whole Groningen operetta was devoted to it. A fire in 1900 destroyed the cafe and the club's first papers, and in 1931 the building was torn down for the widening of Rijksweg 41, after which the club moved to cafe Klinkhamer.

In the 1960s the members began raising money for a rink of their own, through campaigns, gifts, interest-free shares and a great deal of volunteer work, on land donated by the municipality, and it was officially opened on 9 January 1968. From early November to April the rink is in the club's care.
