A village skating club from 1911, opening a brand-new rink on 24 October 2026

IJsvereniging Tolbert came into being in 1911 when two older clubs, De IJsvlakte and De IJsclub, joined forces, and it bought its rink in 1912. Before that the races were held on the Tolbertervaart canal. It is one of the oldest associations in the village.

The races on the rink became so popular that more than a hundred teams of three sometimes entered a relay, and the club was the first skating association in the province of Groningen to hold skating-proficiency tests for young people. Children learned to skate on the middle section while more experienced skaters rode laps around them, and chilled skaters warmed up in the clubhouse afterwards.

After years of talking, planning and building, the club opens its new rink in October 2026, with old films of skating in Tolbert and an exhibition that stays up into November.
