Metepec’s training rink, host of national championships
Winter Sports Center Metepec is a sports academy as well as a public rink. It describes its work as developing winter sports at national and international level, training high-performance athletes while also opening its ice for recreation. Its skating classes take children, teenagers and adults from beginner level through specialization to performance, and its figure-skating coaches say they work regularly with leading coaches from Mexico and abroad. Hockey players come up through two programs, Development and High Performance.
The rink also hosts national events. In November 2024 it held the 38th Mexican Figure Skating Championships, the competition Mexican skaters must go through to compete internationally.
In July 2025 it staged the Miguel Porter Memorial Cup, a tournament founded in 2020 to honor Miguel Gutiérrez Porter, who coached Mexico’s first national team at an IIHF tournament in 1991. Ten teams from around the country played 30 hours of hockey over the weekend. Hunters won Division I by beating Agricultores in the final, and Puebla’s team took Division II, the tier organizer Gustavo Méndez added for adults who had recently taken up the game.
