Valmiera Olympic Centre's ice hall, opened in 2005
Valmiera Olympic Centre, formerly the Vidzeme Olympic Centre, was built and opened in 2005 in Valmiera. It holds an ice hall, a universal sports hall for basketball, volleyball and floorball, and a conference hall. The ice hall takes 550 spectators and the sports hall more than 1,000.
Valmiera sports school runs a figure skating programme in the ice hall, and the hall runs a school skating programme with the municipality, where pupils skate relays around obstacles. Since 2012 the hall has staged the Ledus gladiatori school skating competition, Latvia's largest, for pupils in grades 4 to 8; in the 2018/19 season it drew more than 1,000 participants, and the pandemic interrupted it. Younger children try the Zelta ripa contest.
The most notable event in the hall is the Valmiera hockey championship, held since 2005, which gathers more than 20 amateur teams from Latvia and neighbouring countries.
