Vännäs ice hall opened on 19 December 1981; the town's hockey dates to 1954

Vännäs ice hall opened on 19 December 1981 at the town's recreation area. Until then the local team had played its home matches outdoors at Älvdala.
The hockey it serves is older than the building. In 1954 Ulf Bodin, tired of taking the railbus between Vännäs and Vindeln to train and play for Vindelns IF, formed the hockey section of Vännäs AIK. The team practised without playing matches until a practice game away at Vindeln in the spring of 1955, which Vännäs won 5-3, and that summer it entered Division IV in southern Västerbotten. Vännäs HC was formed in 1979 after the Swedish Sports Confederation refused the club the name Vännäs AIK Ishockey.
The hall gave the sport a lift: nearly every second young person in Vännäs played hockey. Vännäs was also among the first clubs in Västerbotten to form a women's team. The men's team reached the second-highest league in 1962-66 and again in 1991-94, and has otherwise, with a few exceptions, played in the third division.
