Built in 1983; its roof collapsed under snow in 2021 and a temporary Balloon hall replaced it
The Weihenstephan Arena in Vipiteno was built in 1983 in the town's sports area and hosts the home games of the Broncos hockey club. The ice measures 60 by 30 metres, and the stadium has room for 1,700 people, 1,500 of them seated.
On 10 February 2021 the building was closed after its roof collapsed under heavy snow. Court-appointed experts later found design faults in the roof, in particular inadequate anchoring of the trusses.
A temporary structure, the Weihenstephan Balloon, was finished 300 days after the collapse at a cost of 1.8 million euro. It opened on 9 December with the game between Vipiteno and Asiago.
The Broncos won their second Serie A2 title by beating HC Valpellice 3-0 in the final series, and in the same season knocked HC Alleghe, then a full Serie A side, out of the Italian Cup 6-4.
