Open-air rink of 1979, now a covered hall
The Eishalle Wels in the Rosenau district began in 1979 as an open-air rink with simple wooden boards and no roof. A 1991 rebuild replaced the weathered boards with plastic ones, roofed the ice and added the main building with changing rooms, ticket desk and buffet, and a smaller 30 by 30 metre open-air rink was built at the same time. The hall was closed in on the south and east sides in summer 2005, and a 2016 renovation brought boards with glass, more changing rooms and storage rooms. In 2024 the cooling plant, hall lighting and sound system were replaced.
The hall is the home of EHC Fire on Ice Wels and has standing room for a little over 700 people; EC Kapsreiter Wels also names it as its home rink. The city runs skating courses here for children and adults, and the Eisdiscos are a tradition of the hall, held under the motto "Have fun and meet cool people".
