Schierke's rink since 1911, rebuilt as an arena in 2017

A natural-ice rink was opened on this spot beside the Kalte Bode in February 1911. The German ice hockey championship was held in Schierke in 1934, and in 1950 Jutta Müller, later the coach of Katarina Witt, finished as runner-up in figure skating at the first East German winter sports championships here. In 1961 Schierke was declared a restricted zone and the stadium decayed for decades.

In 2013 a Europe-wide architecture competition for a multi-purpose arena was won by GRAFT Architekten. The foundation stone was laid on 18 May 2016 and the arena has been open since 16 December 2017.

The roof spans 2,400 square metres and rests on only two points, and the stadium holds up to 4,900 visitors. In the cold months the arena offers skating, Eisstockschießen, ice discos and skating courses; in summer it turns to roller skating, trampolines, minigolf and bouldering.
