A year-round 30-by-60-metre ice hall run by the Kurbetrieb, sharing its cooling energy with the pool opposite
The Eissporthalle Willingen is open every day of the year and has a 30-by-60-metre ice surface of professional quality, with about 500 pairs of skates to hire. One side of the hall is open, so the building cools itself instead of needing the energy-hungry air conditioning of a closed hall.
The municipal Kurbetrieb Willingen runs the hall. When the Lagunen-Erlebnisbad opposite is open, 80 per cent of the energy used to cool the ice is reused there, and the operator says this energy link has made the hall one of the few publicly run ice halls that manages to break even.
The Willinger Yetis, the local hockey club, train here regularly on Sundays, and the Skiclub Usseln runs the figure-skating teaching. In summer, training groups from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg book the ice, and the hall is popular with clubs for hockey tournaments and camps.
